Malta proposes principles for safe AI use in gambling sector

(AsiaGameHub) –   The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has initiated a public consultation on a draft charter aimed at promoting the ethical and responsible application of artificial intelligence within the gambling industry.

Developed in collaboration with the Malta Digital Innovation Authority, the document seeks to supplement current legal and regulatory frameworks—including the European Union’s AI Act—while addressing the unique requirements of the gambling sector.

MGA CEO Charles Mizzi previously highlighted that AI is already extensively employed by operators for purposes such as customer support, fraud detection, marketing, and risk management.

Mizzi emphasized that the industry now requires clearer direction on how these technologies should be used in a responsible manner.

The regulator acknowledged that while AI offers new opportunities for the gambling sector, it also brings inherent risks. Under the proposed charter, the MGA urges operators to prioritize transparency in AI systems, uphold data protection standards, ensure human oversight in critical decision-making processes, conduct regular algorithm testing to identify errors, and enhance monitoring of technology providers.
