The Dutch lottery issues a warning about taking legal action against the “biggest illegal gambling site”

(AsiaGameHub) -   Nederlandse Loterij has stated it will employ all legal avenues to counter what it considers illegal competition from unlicensed gambling operations. The Netherlands.- The national lottery operator of the Netherlands, Nederlandse Loterij, has revealed its intention to initiate legal action against Qbet and its related entities. It has labeled the brand as "the biggest illegal gambling site" focusing on Dutch customers. Nederlandse Loterij stated it aims to utilize every legal tool at its disposal to take apart Qbet and the broader network supporting it. Qbet is run by Novatech, the same company that operates 55Bet. In the previous month, the Dutch gambling authority, Kansspelautoriteit, imposed a record €24 million fine on the operator for alleged repeated regulatory violations. Although it is uncommon for a licensed gambling operator, as opposed to a regulator, to sue a black-market rival, Nederlandse Loterij established a precedent last year by filing a groundbreaking case against Lalabet. That case is currently under review in The Hague. Novatech possesses a license from the autonomous Dutch Caribbean territory of Curaçao. It was recently issued a ban in Sweden. Clarifying the company's position, Arjan Blok, Chief Executive Officer of Nederlandse Loterij, commented: "Players can still easily access illegal gambling sites, which lack age verification and betting limits and offer irresponsible bonuses and deceptive payment methods: 200,000 Dutch individuals are gambling on these illegal platforms. It is exactly these players who face the highest risks, as they gamble more frequently and with larger sums on illegal sites. "This is why Nederlandse Loterij is assuming responsibility and bringing the largest illegal gambling site to court. We are targeting not just the direct violator, but also all those behind it who enable this site." This article is provided by a third-party. Betsson Forecasts Profit Decline Amid European Tax Hikes

(AsiaGameHub) -   The Swedish gambling operator is feeling the effects of tax increases in Europe. Sweden.- Betsson AB has issued a preliminary trading update for the first quarter of 2026, warning investors of squeezed margins in a number of key markets. The online gambling firm listed in Stockholm expects group revenue to be €285m, a 3 per cent decrease compared to the €294m reported in Q1 2025. EBIT is forecast to drop by 47 per cent to €34m. The company cites a changing revenue mix and increased expenses, especially from higher taxes, for this decline. Revenue grew in Latin America (€93m, up from €75m) and Western Europe (€61m, up from €56m), but fell in the CEECA region (€96m, down from €122m) and the Nordics (€31m, down from €38m). Sportsbook turnover remained stable at €80m, however, casino revenue declined by €8m to €204m. The B2B segment experienced the most significant impact, with revenue falling to €51m from €90m. Despite investor worries regarding the B2B performance, president and CEO Pontus Lindwall remained positive. He stated: “Our B2B business continues to be weighed down by lower revenue at one of our customers. However, since the start of December, this B2B customer has seen a stabilisation in average activity levels. In the slightly longer term, I am excited about growing our B2B revenue with existing and new partners, as we continue to follow our strategy to generate shareholder value over time.” Regarding the consumer business, Lindwall showed comparable assurance: “Our B2C business continues to perform well overall with good growth and significant contribution to operating income. Nevertheless, we are investing in several B2C markets that are not yet profitable, negatively affecting total EBIT by approximately €10-15m on a quarterly basis. We still believe that these markets have potential to become profitable but continuously monitor and evaluate their performance and prospects.” For the full year 2025, Betsson posted an 8 per cent revenue increase to €1.197bn, but earnings dipped by 1 per cent to €313.7m, indicating the initial impact of greater tax pressures. Early trading in the second quarter has been encouraging, with average daily revenue rising 9 per cent year-on-year up to April 8, and sportsbook margins outperforming the eight-quarter average, according to the company. Betsson is scheduled to release its complete Q1 2026 interim report on April 24. The company has not provided any official financial guidance for the current year. SOFTSWISS highlights progress in LatAm at SiGMA South America 2026

(AsiaGameHub) -   SOFTSWISS has wrapped up its involvement in SiGMA South America 2026, where non-executive director Rubens Barrichello and company specialists discussed Brazil’s regulated market growth and sports betting tactics. Press release.- SOFTSWISS concluded its attendance at the SiGMA South America Summit 2026 in São Paulo, Brazil. The firm shaped conversations around regulated market expansion through expert panels and industry dialogues, supported by a series of event-specific initiatives. The tech provider’s on-site activities featured Rubens Barrichello, non-executive director for Latin America at SOFTSWISS, who arrived at the expo hall in a Porsche racing car. The vehicle was later transformed into a racing simulator for visitors to the company’s booth. Barrichello also participated in the summit’s opening ceremony. In his address, he highlighted Brazil’s status as a fast-maturing betting market, where the next phase of growth hinges on advanced technology, clear regulation, and social responsibility. He stressed that this process requires collaboration between the government and tech companies. Rubens Barrichello, non-executive director for LatAm at SOFTSWISS, shares: “I appreciate how the SiGMA South America summit brings together two worlds I know well – racing and technology. The people I meet here understand that building a sustainable market in Brazil takes discipline, tech expertise, and, of course, teamwork. And this reminds me a lot of the racing environment, where teamwork and precision make all the difference.” On the main expo stage, SOFTSWISS hosted an exclusive expert segment: SOFTSWISS Track: Sports Betting Strategy, Integrity & Speed. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, regulators, legal experts, and industry professionals discussed the future of betting across Latin America. The programme opened with a fireside chat between Plínio Lemos Jorge, president of Brazil’s National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL), and Carla Dualib, Regional Business Development Manager at SOFTSWISS and Communication Director at ANJL. They explored the rapid growth of the Brazilian market and the accountability that comes with operating at scale. Carla Dualib, Regional Business Development Manager for Latin America at SOFTSWISS, comments: “A year ago, many of these conversations were still theoretical. Brazil’s market has moved past the point where general ideas are enough. What made these sessions valuable was the willingness to get specific – regulators, operators, and tech providers sharing what actually works on the ground. Honest dialogues like that really move the industry forward.” Beyond the conference stage, SOFTSWISS unveiled the second edition of its limited capsule collection, created in collaboration with Rubens Barrichello and iconic racing brand Sparco. Inspired by the Driven by Ambition concept, the capsule was designed by Brazilian Sportswear Designer Denis Romanello. It reflects a shared focus on performance and reliability across motorsport and technology. The summit concluded with the SOFTSWISS Racing Carnival, an exclusive karting event at the Kartódromo de Granja Viana. The tech provider’s partners joined Rubens Barrichello for demonstration races and competitive karting heats. This racing experience was accompanied by live samba performances, interactive activities, and networking in an informal setting. This article is provided by a third-party. Playtech Denounces Evolution Lawsuit as “Baseless”

(AsiaGameHub) -   Playtech has quickly responded to the latest developments in its legal dispute with Evolution AB, asserting it will "defend itself vigorously" against what it characterized as a "baseless and without merit" defamation lawsuit filed in the United States. This response came after Evolution AB stated that it was escalating its legal battle by seeking to include Playtech as a defendant in its ongoing defamation case before a New Jersey Superior Court. With this action, Playtech is now named alongside Calcagni & Kanefsky LLP and Black Cube, with Juda Engelmayer and others also added to the proceedings. The company stated: As previously announced, Playtech stands by both the decision to commission the report at the centre of Evolution’s claims, and the validity of its findings. Evolution continues to seek to avoid legitimate scrutiny rather than addressing longstanding questions about its own conduct, including its decision to supply operators in both illegal and sanctioned markets and to support unlicensed operators in regulated markets. Playtech reaffirmed its stance on the investigation it commissioned into Evolution’s activities, an investigation that originated last year when Evolution first connected the company to the report. Playtech added: Playtech welcomes court and regulatory examination of the report and its findings and, importantly, the opportunity to be involved in the discovery process including to question Evolution’s employees, executives and officers in court. The company is very confident based on evidence it has, including recent additional evidence, that these proceedings will confirm the credibility and legitimacy of the report and the importance of the issues it seeks to address. Playtech will defend itself vigorously against Evolution’s claims and will continue to act in the best interests of industry operators, suppliers and regulators as well as its shareholders. Earlier, Evolution had accused Playtech of orchestrating a smear campaign intended to damage its standing and secure an advantage in the North American market. The filing includes accusations of “trade libel, fraud and racketeering,” and asserts that Playtech withheld crucial information from shareholders, despite the involvement of CEO Mor Weizer in the preparation and dissemination of the report. Evolution added: We are formally naming Playtech in our lawsuit because the facts are clear: Playtech hired Black Cube to create and publicise a defamatory report designed to harm Evolution, all while misleading the market and lying to investors about its role. For nearly four years, Playtech spent millions of dollars in legal fees to conceal its involvement in this smear campaign and avoid accountability. We are confident in our rigorous compliance policies and practices, and that the facts in this case are on our side. We look forward to holding Playtech, Black Cube, and all their accomplices accountable for the harm they have caused. This article is provided by a third-party. Altenar to tackle Italy’s intricate betting landscape at IGE 2026

(AsiaGameHub) -   Altenar is set to present its sportsbook technology at the upcoming Italian Gaming Expo, taking place in Rome from April 14 to 15. Press release.- Members of the Altenar team are attending the Italian Gaming Expo (IGE) in Rome on April 14–15. The firm will highlight methods for expanding operations within one of the most demanding markets in Europe. With over €20bn in gross gaming revenue recorded last year, Italy represents a significant betting market. However, it is also characterized by high complexity, stemming from rigorous ADM rules, restrictions on content and advertising, and extensive compliance needs for both digital and physical channels. Companies in the sector must deal with further obstacles, including tough reporting duties, licensing limits, and regular changes to regulations that necessitate ongoing adjustments. Non-compliance carries the risk of heavy fines, which complicates market entry and expansion. Achieving success in the Italian market currently demands more than just technical tools. Organizations are moving through a period of transformation marked by a fresh licensing structure, required certifications, enhanced player safety protocols, and some of the most stringent anti-money laundering regulations in Europe. It is essential for operators to utilize a versatile platform and collaborate with a partner that provides customized solutions meeting both commercial objectives and regulatory standards. Dinos Stranomitis, co-founder and COO of Altenar, is scheduled to deliver a presentation titled Future of Betting on April 14, offering perspectives on overcoming these hurdles while capitalizing on the market's potential. Regional director Francesco Papallo stated: “In Italy, being flexible and compliant is essential. The year 2026 will be particularly vital for operators as they navigate significant structural shifts and the need for new certifications under the updated licensing system. Success belongs to those who can adapt quickly.” Visitors at IGE 2026 in Rome can connect with the Altenar team to discover tools designed to help operators grow within regulated, data-centric landscapes. FinHarbor Repackages Its Hybrid Neobank Module – A Unified Banking and CEX Infrastructure Stack for Crypto-Native Financial Products

The company repositions its core offering for operators who need a full-featured centralized exchange, regulated fiat banking, and compliance infrastructure deployed as a single stack Nicosia, Cyprus – April 10, 2026 – (SeaPRwire) – Fintech infrastructure provider FinHarbor has repackaged its Hybrid Neobank Module into a unified launch stack that combines regulated fiat banking with a full-featured centralized exchange engine. Financial platforms, exchanges, and digital asset companies can now deploy both under a single infrastructure rather than assembling them from separate vendors. The move addresses a consistent pain point: operators building hybrid fiat-crypto products have had to piece together exchange engines, banking integrations, compliance layers, and treasury infrastructure from multiple providers. FinHarbor bundles these into one deployable system. A Production-Grade CEX at the Core The exchange engine at the heart of the module is built for serious trading volumes and low-latency execution – relevant both for institutional market makers and algorithmic strategies running at scale. Exact throughput and latency parameters are configured to match each operator’s infrastructure requirements. The platform supports Spot, Margin, and Perpetual Futures trading – open-ended contracts with no expiry date. Traders get a full professional order type suite: Limit, Market, and Stop orders, with Time-in-Force controls and Post Only mode for passive liquidity provision. The trading terminal runs on both web and mobile and includes a full order book with bid/ask depth and cumulative volume, TradingView charting with click-to-price order entry, a depth chart, real-time trade history, and a live view of active, executed, and cancelled orders. Trading pairs – crypto, fiat, and local payment instruments in any combination – are configurable per operator and can be shown selectively to different user groups: retail, institutional, and internal. API Access for Bots and Market Makers The exchange connects via REST, WebSocket, or FIX. A single API key covers both the wallet and the exchange, with granular permission settings managed directly from the interface. This makes the platform usable for bot trading, algorithmic strategies, and third-party market maker integrations without additional infrastructure on the operator’s side. Liquidity is structured by user tier: institutional pairs run on automated market making with external liquidity aggregation, retail pairs are hedged through multi-leg chains, and internal pairs support manual market making with end-of-day hedging. Two Accounts, One Ecosystem Each user operates with multiple accounts within a single ecosystem: a Main Account for deposits, withdrawals, on/off-ramp, and card operations, plus dedicated trading accounts for Spot, Margin, and Futures activity. “The line between banking apps and trading platforms is disappearing,” said Ilya Podoynitsyn, CEO of FinHarbor. “Operators no longer want to assemble five vendors to go live – wallets, exchange engines, compliance, fiat rails, treasury. They need a single infrastructure layer they can deploy, configure, and scale. That’s what we’ve built.” Risk Controls Built Into the Exchange The trading layer includes: Fat Finger Protection against erroneous order submission, Price Slippage Limits, Self-Match Prevention, a User Kill Switch for emergency account deactivation, Cancel on Disconnect for FIX sessions, Message Throttling, and Mass Cancel for rapid position clearing. All trading activity feeds directly into the platform’s AML monitoring and accounting systems. Compliance and Treasury as Core Infrastructure A unified AML and KYC layer covers both fiat and crypto flows, with source-of-funds checks, sanctions screening, and KYT monitoring embedded into onboarding and transactions. Treasury-configured hedging protects operators against exchange rate moves during crypto-fiat conversion. This matters particularly as MiCA in Europe and expanding licensing regimes across MENA raise the compliance bar for hybrid financial products. Built for Operators Expanding Beyond Payments The module is aimed at: challenger banks entering crypto with exchange functionality exchanges adding regulated fiat rails and neobanking features wallets expanding into active trading products OTC and treasury platforms building client-facing financial products The stack also connects to external loyalty and rewards platforms, enabling cashback, points, and retention mechanics without proprietary development. About FinHarbor FinHarbor is a technical platform provider for launching compliant, modular financial products – from wallets and neobanks to crypto ramps and OTC desks. Built on years of real-world fintech experience, the platform covers onboarding, compliance, wallets, transactions, cards, and reporting, delivered with a microservice-based architecture (ISO/PCI DSS-certified), a robust API layer, and on-premise or cloud-ready deployment. FinHarbor supports fiat-only, crypto-native, and hybrid business models across markets in Europe, MENA, and beyond. South African Regulator Introduces Online Verification Platform for Legal Gambling Operators

(AsiaGameHub) -   To better educate and protect players about legal and regulated gambling activities in South Africa, the National Gambling Board (NGB) launched a new online verification portal on Wednesday in partnership with all South African gambling operators that hold valid licenses under South African gambling laws. As part of an ongoing initiative to tackle illegal and unauthorised gambling, the NGB’s goal is to give players a way to confirm whether an operator is authorised and regulated to operate legally within South Africa. The verification portal was developed jointly by the NGB and provincial licensing authorities (PLAs), and provides a searchable register of all legally licensed land-based and online gambling operators in South Africa. Acting CEO of the NGB, Lungile Dukwana, stated: This platform is a critical step in protecting South Africans from the risks posed by illegal gambling. It provides the public with a trusted resource to verify licensed gambling operators, ensures that those who choose to gamble can do so in a safe, regulated environment, and strengthens oversight and accountability within the gambling industry. According to the NGB, in FY 2024/25, South African players wagered a total of R1.5 trillion (approximately US$89-billion) across all types of legal gambling, marking a 31.3% increase compared to FY 2023/24. In addition, the rapid growth of cross-border online gambling and offshore betting sites that target South African players without proper South African authorization has made it difficult for local regulators to keep up with the pace of regulatory change. Regulatory challenges for South African regulators stemming from illegal and unlicensed offshore and online gambling operators continue to be a serious impediment to the country’s regulated gambling marketplace. The South African Bookmakers Association (SABA) recently reported that 62% of total online gambling activity by South African players takes place on unlicensed gambling sites. The NGB’s verification portal aims to help players gain a better understanding of South Africa’s legal and regulated gambling industry, while encouraging players to verify an operator’s legitimacy and legality before placing any bets. Q1 2026: Betsson Shares Decline Amid Weak CEECA Performance

(AsiaGameHub) -   Betsson’s shares fell sharply following the release of its preliminary Q1 2026 results, at one point declining more than 20% before slightly bouncing back. As of April 9, the stock trades at SEK90.10, down 14.4% from the previous closing price of SEK104.80. Betsson anticipates Q1 revenue will hit €285 million, representing a 3% fall from €294 million in the corresponding period last year. Profitability declined more steeply: EBIT is forecast at €34 million, versus €64 million in Q1 2025. Regional results were mixed, with the biggest slump occurring in the Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia (CEECA) region. Revenue here dropped 21% year-over-year, going from €122 million to €96 million. Even with this decline, CEECA still stands as Betsson’s top revenue-producing region. That said, robust growth in Latin America is narrowing the gap—revenue there increased 24% to €93 million. This weaker performance continues a trend seen in Q4 2025, where total revenue dipped slightly year-on-year and CEECA revenue decreased by 9%. Market pressures could be tied to regulatory changes in Turkey, where President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has adopted a firm position against unlicensed online gambling—calling it potentially “more harmful than terrorism” and vowing to eradicate it. It’s thought that Betsson has exposure to the Turkish market via a B2B deal, which might be a factor in the downturn. The results also mirror a change in Betsson’s revenue composition. CEO Pontus Lindwall had earlier emphasized a strategic shift toward B2C operations. This is clear in Q1’s numbers: B2B revenue fell substantially from €90 million to €51 million. At the same time, B2C performance demonstrated resilience—casino revenue rose 4%, and sportsbook remained steady. Lindwall pointed out that B2B performance had been “dragged down by reduced revenue from one of our clients,” but added that the partner’s activity levels have stabilized since December. Betsson stated that average daily revenue in Q2 is currently running 9% higher than in the same period last year, providing a glimmer of optimism. But this hasn’t stopped a negative market response. Investors will have to wait until April 24—when the full Q1 interim report is published—to get a clearer picture of the company’s performance and future prospects. International Entertainment Corp Clears $113M Debt After DigiPlus Investment

(AsiaGameHub) -   International Entertainment Corp (IEC) has settled US$113 million in debt, utilizing funds from the first issuance of Subscription Notes to DigiPlus Interactive Corp. The company verified the redemption of HK$489 million (US$63 million) in promissory notes and the payment of an additional HK$392 million (US$50 million) in bank loans. These settlements were financed by the initial HK$800 million (US$102.5 million) portion of the Subscription Notes. These Subscription Notes, amounting to HK$1.6 billion (US$205 million) in two tranches, form a component of a wider November agreement. This arrangement will result in DigiPlus obtaining a controlling interest in IEC and its principal property, the recently renamed LaVie Resort & Casino, which encompasses the New Coast Hotel Manila. Following the issuance and conversion of the total note amount, DigiPlus is projected to own a 53.89% share of IEC. IEC considers this deal a significant move to enhance its liquidity and financial health. For its part, DigiPlus seeks to grow its entertainment portfolio by merging a physical casino platform with its digital business. Under a provisional license from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation issued in 2023, IEC is presently converting the New Coast Hotel Manila into a comprehensive integrated resort. The company has pledged a minimum investment of US$1 billion for this development and has already assumed complete operational management of the casino, taking over from PAGCOR. Finland considers listing state-owned gambling monopoly Veikkaus on the stock exchange.

(AsiaGameHub) -   The Finnish government has indicated that it may launch a public stock offering for Veikkaus, the state-owned gambling operator. However, several requirements must be met before a public listing can proceed. Reports suggest that Finland is on track to become the first Nordic country to implement a competitive licensing system for online gambling starting in 2027. This transition marks a major shift for Veikkaus, as it will relinquish its exclusive rights to online sports betting and digital slot machines. Despite this, the company will retain its monopoly over lottery games, scratch cards, land-based slot machines, and physical casinos. The possibility of listing the gambling entity on the stock market was brought to light in November, following an interview between Strandberg and local media. A public offering would allow the gambling monopoly to be traded on the Helsinki Exchange, opening the door for private investors to hold shares in the company. As other nations move toward deregulating and selling off their state-run gambling monopolies, Finland appears ready to follow a similar path. This article is provided by a third-party. Evolution Lawsuits Evolution to Involve Playtech in Defamation Case

(AsiaGameHub) -   Evolution is intensifying its legal fight by seeking to add Playtech as a defendant in its existing defamation lawsuit filed in a New Jersey Superior Court. The lawsuit initially named Calcagni & Kanefsky LLP, the law firm that delivered a 2021 report to regulators accusing Evolution of operating in prohibited markets like China, Iran, and Sudan. This report was commissioned following Playtech's hiring of the private intelligence agency Black Cube. Subsequent inquiries by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement and the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board concluded without any punitive measures being taken against Evolution. Evolution stated: It remains deeply disappointing that a direct rival would resort to such extreme measures to engineer a secret campaign aimed at damaging our company and evading fair market competition. We are officially adding Playtech to our legal action because the evidence is unambiguous: Playtech engaged Black Cube to produce and disseminate a defamatory report intended to injure Evolution, all while deceiving the market and its investors about its involvement. Evolution alleges that Playtech, which paid an estimated $2.4 million to Black Cube for the investigation, utilized the resulting report as a component of a broader plan to undermine Evolution's standing in the U.S. market. The revised legal filing now levels accusations at Playtech for trade libel, fraud, and racketeering. Furthermore, Evolution is requesting permission to expand its original complaint to name communications consultant Juda Engelmayer and other parties. Evolution further claims that Playtech's CEO, Mor Weizer, failed to disclose necessary information to the company's shareholders. Evolution added: We have full confidence in our stringent compliance protocols and are certain the facts support our position. We anticipate ensuring Playtech, Black Cube, and all those who assisted them are held responsible for the damage they have inflicted. Playtech has denied the allegations, asserting that its conduct was proper. Playtech said As stated before, Playtech reaffirms its choice to commission the report central to Evolution's allegations and stands by the accuracy of its conclusions. Evolution persists in trying to sidestep proper examination instead of confronting persistent concerns about its own behavior, such as its choice to provide services to operators in both illegal and sanctioned jurisdictions and to aid unlicensed operators in regulated markets. Despite the ongoing legal dispute, Playtech is continuing to grow its North American operations. For 2025, Playtech announced a 71% revenue surge in the United States and Canada compared to the prior year, primarily driven by its partnerships with operators like DraftKings, FanDuel, Hard Rock, and Delaware North. Playtech's projected growth in North America is likely to receive a boost from the expected regulatory approval for online casino gaming in Maine. The company added: Playtech will mount a robust defense against Evolution's accusations and remains committed to acting for the benefit of industry operators, suppliers, regulators, and its shareholders. Flutter Launches Betfair Prediction Markets in Beta

(AsiaGameHub) -   Flutter Entertainment has unveiled its Betfair Predictions Betting product in a beta launch. This new Betfair Predictions service will function as an adapted version of the Betfair Exchange platform, tailored specifically for prediction markets. It will operate under the existing Betfair UK Gaming licence, allowing users to place wagers on real-world events across categories such as sports, politics, and entertainment. Differing from conventional betting where a user places a bet on an event's outcome, this system requires users to make a prediction by choosing yes or no and then staking their wager. Utilizing the same system as the current Betfair Exchange is expected to be advantageous for the operator. Betfair reports that its exchange platform is projected to handle £84 billion in betting volume in 2025, a 10% increase from the year before. During the beta period, access to Betfair Predictions will be restricted to a select group of users invited by Betfair to trial the product. The company has indicated that it is "too early to say" what the future development path for the product will be after the beta concludes. This testing phase will gather insights on how UK consumers engage with betting products that utilize prediction-based mechanics. This article is provided by a third-party. Ohio lawmakers propose new sports betting restrictions State lawmakers have introduced the Save Ohio Sports Act, which aims to put new limits on sports betting across Ohio. The bill would cap individual wager sizes, ban mobile betting, and outlaw specific bet types including prop bets and in-game wagers. Players would be restricted to $100 per wager, and allowed to place no more than 8 wagers over a 24-hour period at licensed casinos. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has supported removing prop bets from legal betting offerings, following an investigation involving two Cleveland Guardians pitchers. The proposed legislation is intended to strengthen consumer protections and improve regulation of Ohio’s sports betting industry. Italy’s World Cup failure amplifies calls to end gambling ad ban Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has launched an investigation into the governance and funding of Italian football, after the national men’s team failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The upset has led to growing demands to lift Italy’s existing ban on gambling advertisements and sponsorships. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has faced widespread criticism, which has resulted in the resignation of its president Gabriele Gravina and other top leaders. There is growing recognition of a major funding gap in Italian sports, with proposals to restore financial sustainability by allowing gambling sponsorships. The 2018 Dignity Decree, which implemented the gambling advertising ban, is now being questioned over its negative impact on Italian football’s revenue. Sport Minister Andrea Abodi has already proposed lifting the ban on gambling sponsorships in sports, but progress on the change has been slow. The future of both funding and governance for Italian football remains uncertain. Latvia’s national gambling regulator is disbanded Latvia’s Lotteries and Gambling Supervisory Inspection has been dissolved, and all of its former regulatory duties have been transferred to the State Revenue Service. This government restructuring is designed to streamline regulation, particularly for the fast-growing online gambling sector. The State Revenue Service has created new dedicated divisions for licensing, compliance, and inspections to maintain strong regulatory oversight. In neighboring Baltic countries, Estonia has begun cutting gambling tax rates, while Lithuania is considering a mandatory player card system for anyone accessing gambling services. These changes reflect a broader trend of modernizing and updating gambling regulations across the Baltic region. The evolution of Europe’s igaming market: from monopolies to a regulated industry Summary: The article explores the evolution of the European iGaming industry over the past decade, focusing on the shift toward stronger, more robust regulatory frameworks across multiple countries. It examines how nations including Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece, Finland, and Malta have updated their regulations to meet the needs of the growing industry. The piece also addresses the role of the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) in pushing for regulatory harmonization, as well as ongoing challenges including illegal unregulated markets, inconsistent rules across jurisdictions, and unresolved issues around gambling advertising. Insights from industry operators highlight both the operational challenges and new opportunities created by the shifting regulatory landscape. The article concludes by emphasizing the progress Europe has made in institution-building and cross-border regulatory cooperation, marking this as a major milestone for the global iGaming sector. Malta to streamline its igaming tax framework Gambling companies operating in Malta will see changes to VAT and gaming tax rules starting October 1, 2026. The Malta Tax and Customs Administration and Malta Gaming Authority announced the reforms, which are intended to create a clearer, more predictable tax framework for operators. Amendments to the VAT Act will clarify exemption rules for gambling suppliers, ensuring taxation is applied at the place of consumption. Gaming tax regulations will be simplified and consolidated into a single structure that applies to both land-based and online operators. These changes aim to strengthen Malta’s fiscal resilience and regulatory clarity, while preserving the competitiveness of the country’s gaming sector. The government is also considering regulating prediction platforms in Malta, to clarify whether the sector falls under gambling or financial regulation. Dutch gambling regulator publishes new guidance on duty of care requirements The Dutch gambling regulator, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has released new research and guidance on duty of care obligations for licensed online gambling operators. The new studies focus on in-person interviews with players suspected of excessive gambling behavior, and the registration process for the Central Register for Exclusion from Gambling (CRUKS). The KSA has published updated guidelines based on feedback from license holders to clarify implementation practices. The regulator stressed the importance of advising players to register with CRUKS if they show signs of problematic gambling behavior. The new guidance aims to clarify existing obligations to support safer gambling practices. Additionally, the KSA recently reminded licensed sports betting operators of the limits of their licenses, after discovering unapproved non-sports bets being offered. Operators were ordered to remove these unauthorized offerings to remain compliant with regulations. Gibraltar issues first prediction markets license in potentially controversial move The Gibraltar government has granted a license to a prediction markets operator, making it one of the few European jurisdictions to formally regulate this type of platform. The move aims to diversify Gibraltar’s existing gambling and financial services ecosystem. The licensed firm, Predict Street Ltd, is now listed as an authorized betting intermediary and has ties to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This decision comes amid growing concerns over the economic impact of the UK’s increased Remote Gaming Tax on Gibraltar’s economy. While prediction markets have faced controversy across Europe, Gibraltar’s move contrasts with countries like Germany and France, which have banned certain prediction platforms. The future of prediction markets in Gibraltar remains uncertain, though existing iGaming operators and major international players including Kalshi and Polymarket have expressed potential interest. The UK’s regulatory stance is also expected to impact the operations of Gibraltar-licensed operators that target British consumers. This article is provided by a third-party.
